Directions & Map

We are located in the boondocks, eight miles south of Sperryville, Virginia. Senator Eugene McCarthy says: "Rappahannock County is 75 miles and 75 years away from Washington D.C." The Conyers House is 45 minutes east of Luray (the famous caverns), 45 minutes north of Charlottesville (The University, Monticello), 45 west of Warrenton (Gold Cup nearby), and 45 minutes south of Middleburg (stable tour and races). We are one hour east of US 81 at New Market and within 100 miles of 80% of all Civil War battlegrounds. The village of Sperryville is known for its good antiquing. Many vineyards are nearby and there are excellent restaurants in the county.  Fool Proof Directions and the slightly longer but Scenic Route appear below the map.

Fool Proof Directions

From Washington, D.C., take 495 to 66 West, then exit on 29 South at Gainesville; drive 12 miles to Warrenton, where you turn west on 211 and go 28 miles to Sperryville.

To find The Conyers House, turn left at Shaw's service station on 522 South and then left again at the stop sign.* From 522, turn right on 231 (after the cemetery ~ three quarters of mile out of town). Beware of deer crossing 231. Drive about eight miles, then turn left on 707, which is Slate Mills Road.

After six-tenths of a mile, turn left into the Conyers House driveway. You may wish to pull into the south (2nd entrance) pictured below to unload your luggage under our porte-cochère , pictured below and to your right.

The Slightly Longer but Scenic Route

Driving west on 66, exit 40 at Haymarket. Left onto 15, cross over 66, and turn right at the second light onto 55. Drive five miles on 55 and turn left onto Blantyre Road. At the end of this lovely country road, turn left onto 17 and drive into Warrenton. Mind the speed limit going into Warrenton on 17 Business is 25 mph. At the light turn right onto 29 Business, then right again onto 211 West. 28 miles later is Sperryville. Turn left at the big, old red schoolhouse now called The Link on 522/211. Two seconds later, at the at the tee junction* admire the lovely maple on the right in Tom Junk's yard, and turn left onto 522 in pursuit of 231. See photo below.

About 3/4s of a mile from the junction, having passed the cemetery on your right, is 231. Right onto 231, see Old Rag at the end, go eight miles to the first cross road which is 707 or Slate Mills Road. Left onto 707, and The Conyers House .6 of a mile on the left.

NOTES:
  • Our sign is small as is the custom in Rapphannock County. If you arrive in the dark, you won't like it if you sail past our entrance(s) as Slate Mills Road becomes very curvy with fast driving good ole boys in pickup trucks coming at you on their way home from visiting "Mama-n'em".
  • There are two good reasons to drive slowly and carefully on Slate Mills Road. Loose animals on the road, and missing The Conyers House

The green building is Rudy's which is our only pizza place and the brown building is Thornton River Grille, the best restaurant in town. If you come in the fall, be sure to admire the famous Sperryville maple pictured below. The Corner Store, situated between the two, has gone upscale and you can even buy Veuve Clicquot champagne there to say nothing of a series of special cheeses, odd beers, tempting sandwiches.
